Let’s say you rent a 25-foot-wide by 80-foot-deep space in a shopping centre. This lease area has a gross square footage of 2,000 square feet. In most cases, the front sales room is heated and cooled. Then, from the 2,000 sq. ft., subtract the 375 sq. ft. sales field, which is 25 feet wide by 15 feet deep. This leaves you with a total of 1,625 square feet. The boiler room measures 10 feet by 10 feet (100 square feet) and the bathroom measures 6 feet by 6 feet (36 square feet), for a total of 136 square feet. Normally, the cooled area is overlooked.

This gives you a total of 1,489 square feet of exhaust and cooling space in the work area. You should calculate from the floor to the roof deck to determine the cubic feet of the work area. Since I never recommend adding a ceiling in the work room, I tell roof deck. Multiply the 1,489 square feet by the 15 feet between the floor and the roof deck to get a total of 22,335 cubic feet of area to exhaust.
